this is new amsterdam vape and in this video i will show you how to make your own e-liquid using a digital scale. mixing e-liquid by weight is a very efficient and accurate method which allows you to mix your liquid directly into your target container. this is a preferred method of mixing e-liquid by many people and i would like to take this video
to expand on what i showed you in my previous video about making e-liquid. let's take a look at the ingredients necessary for making e-liquid. vegetable glycerin is the thick liquid that's the vapor base and cloud producer in your liquid. propylene glycol is the thin liquid that's the flavor base and gives the liquid its throat hit. i'll be using nicotine from nude nicotine
this is a stronger nicotine strength at 50 milligrams per milliliter and it's a vg based liquid. handling nicotine can be very dangerous if it comes in direct contact with your skin which can give you nicotine sickness leading to headaches and nausea. so gloves are very important for handling nicotine and mixing your liquid in general.
the flavors i'm using are from the flavor apprentice these flavors contain pg, water, ethyl alcohol and triacetin which is another type of flavor carrier. it's important to avoid oil based flavors or extracts as well as flavors that contain diacetyl. diacetyl can be found in creamy or custard type flavors and can cause breathing problems and discomfort in the lungs. so it's very important to avoid diacetyl in general. i'll be mixing in a 60 millililter amber glass bottle
with a dropper cap. i find when i mix in a 30 or 15 milliliter bottle i go through it very quickly if i like the liquid. so i've been making larger batch sizes. a scale is the most important part when mixing your liquid by weight. this scale is a highly recommended scale for making e-liquid since it comes with calibration weights to calibrate it precisely. this also comes with an a/c plug which is great because it keeps the scale on while you mix
so there's no auto-off function that turns off the scale while you're weighing so you don't lose your place in the mix. this scale should also be accurate to one-hundredth of a gram or two decimal places. i'm going to demonstrate this scale. press and hold the cal button to calibrate and cal will show on the screen. press once again and the scale will read 200 grams. place the first 200 gram weight onto the scale.
the screen will then read 400 grams. place the second 200 gram weight onto the scale. when the screen reads pass the scale is calibrated and good to go. the recipe i'll be making today is a creamy banana type flavor. i'll be using vanilla cupcake at 5% ripe banana at 3% and whipped cream at 3% i'll be using the steam engine e-liquid calculator to calculate what i'll need to produce my liquid. first enter the batch size which today will be 60 milliliters.
next enter the nicotine strength which will be 50 milligrams per milliliter the nicotine is mixed in 100% vg so i'll put 100% vg in the vg to pg ratio. a new feature to the steam engine calculator allows you to add your flavorings and their percentages. enter your flavors and specify whether they are vg based or not. these flavors are pg based so i'll leave the vg checkbox unchecked. enter your target nicotine strength which today will be 3 milligrams per milliliter.
then enter your target ratio which will be 50% vg to 50% pg. the calculator will give you a breakdown of each ingredient and exactly how many milliliters to add. now here's a breakdown for the ingredients i'll be using for today's mix. if you notice, these are listed in milliliters which is for volumetric measuring but these figures are not what we need to measure by weight. when using milliliters this is a measurement of volume or how much space a particular liquid is taking up
weight is measured in grams one milliliter of water is equal to one gram. but some liquids are more or less dense than water so they won't convert to grams as easily. there are calculators that do this conversion for you automatically but i'd like to break down how to do these conversions yourself. using a graduated cylinder i measured 10 milliliters of vegetable glycerin this comes to a weight of 12.59 grams
taking this figure and dividing by 10 gives a weight of 1.259 grams to each milliliter. this makes sense because vegetable glycerin is a much denser liquid than water so each milliliter will weigh more than one gram using the same method to measure the propylene glycol it comes to a specific gravity of 1.031 grams. propylene glycol is very much like water but it's just a little bit more dense. since nicotine is available in a variety of different strengths
each will have their own specific gravity. i'd like to break down how to calculate the weight of each milliliter of nicotine used. i'm using nicotine with a strength of 50 milligrams per milliliter in a vegetable glycerin base. doing some research i found that each milliliter of pure nicotine weighs 1.01 grams. as we saw before each milliliter of vegetable glycerin is equal to 1.26 grams. so if we took 100 milliliters of this particular strength of nicotine mix 5% is pure nicotine while the other 95% is vegetable glycerin so we just need to calculate the weight of each and add them together.
5 multiplied by 1.01 gives us 5.05 95 multiplied by 1.26 gives us 119.7 adding these two together gives us 124.75 we divide this by 100 which gives us 1.2475 grams. with this strength of nicotine, each milliliter weighs 1.2475 grams now that we know the specific gravity of each liquid we can convert the volumetric measurements to their weight in grams
which allows us to use the scale. there are calculators available to do all this for you and it makes the process much easier. but i really wanted to demonstrate how these measurements are found and converted to begin the mixing process turn on your scale and place the empty bottle on the middle of the scale allow a moment for the scale to finish measuring then press the tare button. this will subtract the weight of what is on the scale
resetting the scale to 0. this will be very useful for measuring each liquid individually. i'll start mixing with the flavorings first the vanilla cupcake using a disposable pipette, transfer the flavoring into the bottle i'll be placing 3.11 grams into the bottle. don't pour the liquid too fast and give the scale some time to catch up to display the measurements.
so you don't accidentally put too much. when you're close to the target weight place individual drops into the bottle until you hit that target weight you can already see the precision that using a scale allows. i went over by one-hundredth of a gram but that's well within a margin of error press the tare button to set the scale back to 0. next i'll be adding the ripe banana flavoring.
using a new disposable pipette i'll add 1.87 grams. when you reach the target weight press the tare button to set the scale back to 0. now for the whipped cream flavor. i'll be adding another 1.87 grams of this flavor i went a little bit over but it's still within a margin of error. next i'll add the nicotine.
this nicotine came with tape wrapped around the top of the bottle to prevent any leaks. i like to keep this tape on the bottle when it's stored away, as a precaution. remove the tape and the lid of the nicotine i'll be adding 4.5 grams of nicotine to the batch. this nicotine is in a vegetable glycerin base so it's very thick
and takes a few moments to fill the pipette make sure to use extreme caution not dripping any on the scale or anywhere you might come into contact with the nicotine. when i'm done adding the nicotine i'll place the cap back on immediately and rewrap with the tape. place the nicotine away and throw out the pipette immediately
where it won't accidentally come into contact with anyone, any children or pets. now i'll add the vegetable glycerin to the mix. i'll be adding 33.37 grams. since it's such a large amount i've been using these clear condiment bottles they're pretty handy for measuring out large amounts of the liquid while allowing accurate drops when necessary.
when you get close to the target weight pause for a moment for the scale to catch up then drip in the vg a little bit at a time. until you hit the target weight. when you're finished, hit the tare button and set the scale back to 0. finally add the propylene glycol. i'll be adding 24.2 grams of the propylene glycol
this liquid is very thin and flows quickly so be careful not to over pour. i went over just a little bit but it's still within a margin of error to not affect the outcome of the batch. the mixing process is now complete as you saw using a scale allows for much more accurate measuring
over volumetric measuring. so each batch will be exactly the same down to one-hundredth of a gram. also there's less cleanup required since you're mixing directly into your target container this is a preferred mixing process for many people and whether you're making small batches or large batches it'll always be precise to the recipe. now that the ingredients are together they need to be blended.
i use a drill with a clamp to spin the bottle which works really well for me to mix individual bottles. of course you have to be careful when using this method and make sure the clamp is tightened down so the bottle doesn't go flying off. i like to use these pieces from old milk frothers that i used for making coffee. these fit into my drill and are great for blending large batches in an open container before they're placed into individual bottles.
they also allow air into the mix so you must be careful not to over mix your liquid or this can degrade the flavoring. after you make your flavors you want to allow them to sit for a while. this process goes by many names like steeping, curing or aging. but it's an important process for making your liquids. this allows your flavors to meld together over time i recommend to allow any mix you make
to steep for a minimum of a week before you vape it. breathing is one method that's used for steeping your liquids. take off the cap and allow it to get some air into the mix. this can degrade the flavorings by allowing the aroma molecules to escape and the nicotine can oxidize and degrade if it's done for too long. but it is an important process to allow flavors with ethyl alcohol to evaporate away from the mix. this candle warmer is perfect for a hot water bath for the liquid. using heat is a good method for blending the flavors together but this should only be done for short periods of time.
it is possible to over heat your liquid and you can degrade the nicotine and the flavorings so you end up with something that's muted. i usually do a hot water bath for no more than an hour at a time. then i shake the bottle once a day and allow it to sit in a dark, cool place. it also helps to let the flavor breathe with the cap off while it's doing a hot water bath for a little bit of time this helps speed up the ethyl alcohol evaporation process.
time will always be the most important factor when steeping your liquids. a good way to tell how much time is necessary for your liquids is to test it about once or twice a week and take note of how the flavors change over time. sometimes some liquids that start off weak in the flavor really blossom after a couple of weeks. it's all subjective to your own tastes so try to experiment as much as possible. this has been new amsterdam vape
